Today I read
Samuel 3 and 4

In verse 7 that Samuel had not yet experienced the Lord, because the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. now that is a sad statement to be said about Eli because apparently Eli had not taught him him to listen for God's voice. It is neat how Samuel instantly knew the Lord was speaking but when the Lord was calling he did not know the voice. I think that in chapter 4 the Israelites were defeated a second time because they quit relying on God and believed that something else might save them so God aloud them to be defeated.
