2 samuel!

In verse 1:7-9 where it says:

When he turned and saw me, he called out to me, so I answered: I'm at your service. He asked me, "who are you?" I told him: I'm an Amalekite. "Then he begged me, stand over me and kill me for I am mortally wounded, but my life still lingers." So I stood over him and killed him for I new that after he had fallen he couldn't survive. So I took the crown that was on his head and the armband that was on his wrist and have brought them here to my lord. This guy misread Davids character and paid for it with his life. He expected a reward but he was wrong. When the young men got up to compete did all Davids men and all Abners men die or did only Abners men die it wasn't clear.

Son, I want you to notice something especially about this chapter. It reads that "David and all the men with him took hold of their clothes and tore them" - what kind of leader is David that all his men are like minded? That all the opportunity that David had to kill Saul himself, yet his men were not bitter or too anxious. Why do people follow this kind of man? It is apparent that they are not in it to be Generals or concerned about stature themselves or they would want David to be king quickly, right? That's the kind of leader you should be. One that tells of his convictions to others by the things he DOES and SAYS. Mighty men that never knew defeat ran away with David...where he went, they went. That's devotion and humility and fearless warriors submit to a leader who is authentic, real and true to his convictions.
