1 John 3:6

1 John 3:6 (New King James Version)
Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.

What does abide mean? I am going to throw out a few definitions.
abide-act in accord with. Verb
sin-to offend against a principle, standard, etc.

This verse is very confusing to me, but after reading those definitions I bet you already know where I am going with this.
If to abide is to act like or in accord and Jesus didn't sin then how do we abide in Jesus and still sin. The first part of this verse makes sense to me and I understand but this next part, Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him, I just can not understand. I guess it's that when you are living in a sinful lifestyle means that you are not walking in the spirit of God thus no matter what you say you aren't in the spirit. But this verse says that you neither seen him nor know him. Seen means ever seen him or known him. So it means that if you sin you have never known him. But this book of the bible was written after Jesus died for us.
So in our sinful nature we never knew Jesus but he covers our sins so that we can know God.
I think that is what it means but I'm not sure. If you have an opinion then please say.

Abiding in - to be part of..like a branch is part of a tree. He uses a similar example about vines, doesn't He? Maybe you could compare and contrast it to that to help you.
